I really enjoyed this season of The Diplomat, perhaps no surprise given that I liked the last two, but after a solid run on top of Netflix’s Top 10 list, it’s been unseated by something new and somewhat surprising.
Knocking The Diplomat down to #2 (besides WWE RAW earlier in the week) is Mob War: Philadelphia vs. The Mafia. From that title, you may guess that this is not a fictional show, but a true crime documentary. And yes, it is. There are three ~45 minute episodes about the FBI trying to take on the Cosa Nostra in the ‘90s, something that many people may not know about, or at least have forgotten about. I can’t say I’m shocked that the show does not have a Rotten Tomatoes critic or audience score, as that tends to happen with a lot of these true crime series, especially this early.
The Diplomat does not have to worry about its season 3 performance, as it’s already been renewed for season 4, and that’s supposed to start filming next month already. The show was early renewed months ago as Netflix continues to express confidence in the political series that appears to be an attempt to replicate the longevity of The West Wing (with a few carryover actors, to boot).
I don’t think Mob War will stay at #1 for long; rather it will be replaced by Nobody Wants This, the hit comedy from Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, returning for season 2 after a breakout season 1. Those ten episodes are live today, thankfully not split in half over two months. Early reviews are good, though a bit less than the stellar 95% it had for season 1. But there are many more opinions to come.
The Love is Blind finale has aired, and now all that’s left is the reunion show, which airs in six days. My wife has informed me she was disappointed with this season and that no one ended up married by the end, which does not happen often. Not that those are such solid relationships, but it’s sort of like, well, what did we do all that for, then?
One new show on the list to watch, debuting at #4, is The Monster of Florence, a series about Italy’s first serial killer, which is a unique concept we rarely see in this age of mostly American/British murder dramas. This is a scripted show, not a docuseries.
I finished The Diplomat, I don’t really care about the mob in the ‘90s, and so I will be watching Nobody Wants This soon enough here. I’ll report back on how it compares to season 1.
